Hit-and-run case grows cold

Every bicyclist in the state owes thanks to a Highway Patrol lieutenant named Channing Taylor. When two young cyclists in Brevard County were hit by a pickup truck nearly five years ago, killing one of them, Taylor methodically assembled evidence that pointed to a certain Dodge Dakota truck and its driver. As told in Florida Today, the cop conducted an impressive and successful investigation -- but the prosecutor refused to take the next step and get an arrest warrant for the driver, who lived in Satelllite Beach. The statute of limitations will run out in June 2008, and the driver may never stand before a court to answer for the death of William Keith Swaim, 14 -- or even for leaving the scene of an accident.

All of us who want the protection of the traffic laws to be real and not just ink on paper need to write a letter about this. And while you're at it, drop a note to John A. Torres at Florida Today and thank him for his report.
