How about a bike train to Miami?

Updated Jan. 10
Larry Lagarde, a bicycle enthusiast in Louisiana, is trying to inspire Amtrak to offer a bike train to desirable bicycle touring locations. His blog describes such a service offered in Canada, and it does look good to me. After you check it out, click the page title to see feedback from around the country. Naturally I'd love to see your suggestions of Amtrak points in Florida or elsewhere that would be good for such a service. Just click the comment button below. Oh, yeah, tell Larry what you think, too.

The Amtrak map for Florida suggests a number of possibilities between Jacksonville and Miami. Imagine you're in Miami and want to go riding in Sebring, Winter Haven or Kissimmee -- all of them in country that regularly charms bicyclists. Either the Silver Meteor, leaving at 7:15 a.m., or the Silver Star, at 8:50 a.m., would get you there in 3 1/2 hours. I gather from the Canadian site that the idea isn't to add special trains but to equip baggage cars for roll-on loading of bikes, so travel with a bike is less trouble. It would be swell to have this service for the annual Bike Sebring in February or the Tour of Sebring over Labor Day weekend.
