New ride for fat-tire devotees

Here's an outdoor treat I highly recommend -- the Biscayne-Everglades Fat Tire Mountain Bike Ride on Saturday, Feb. 2.

The 42-mile route starts at the Everglades National Park visitor center west of Florida City. It's the route of the proposed Biscayne-Everglades Greenway, which I believe, if it gets built anytime soon, would be the first bicycle trail anywhere to connect two national parks. This is not a ride for the novice, and not for anyone who has to ride fast. Nineteen miles or so is over rocky ground. You might even want to bring an extra tire and tube.

Tom Burton of the Everglades Bicycle Club is organizing the ride to draw attention to the Greenway project. If you want to go, check out the map below, then let Tom know you're coming. The ride begins at 9 a.m. on the 2nd. There are segments of 17 and 24 miles in case the full trail is too much for someone.
