Miami mayor encourages bicycling

Mayor Manny Diaz proclaimed Miami Bicycle Month today, with a resolution calling upon all Miamians to embrace and encourage bicycling. The first "whereas" shows you where the mayor's coming from:
The City of Miami values bicycling as one means of reducing the impact of motor vehicle traffic and the accompanying toxic emissions, a decrease that promises to make our urban environment more livable, to improve the health and well-being of our residents and to enhance Miami's reputation as a beautiful and accessible tourist destination. Diaz has created a Bicycle Action Committee under the city's Green Commission. The committee of bicyclists will work with and advise city experts who have direct responsibility for the areas in which pro-bicycle changes can be made. Their first meeting was yesterday afternoon.

The mayor presented the proclamation to me as chairman of the Green Mobility Network. I responded with thanks on behalf of the whole bicycle community, and called it a good start on a big job. I think there are many reasons to be optimistic.
